Honolulu 33, Madison 24

      From the Honolulu Hurricanes Bulletin

In front of 1,500 fans at the NBC Arena, the 'Canes put the Mad Dogs to sleep. An outstanding kick off return by Falaniko Vitale to the 'Canes 23 yd line set the pace for the offense. QB Mike Tillis then put the hustling Hurricane offense in scoring position. The 'Canes with 12:02 left in the first quarter gave Mike Tillis the opportunity to run the ball in for 6 pts. This was followed by a failed extra point attempt by kicker A. Champathong. The defense then took to the field and worked their magic with an almost immediate interception by DB Mike Wolfe.

QB Mike Tillis took advantage of this turnover and drove the ball to the 3 yd line. Then Mike Tillis did it again. A QB run put the Hurricanes up another 6 pts. 'Canes 12 - Dogs 0. Another failed extra point left the score 12 - 0. The Dogs finally got on the board with a hand-off from QB Mike Simpson to RB Brian Knuckles for a 7 yd touchdown. The Dogs missed the extra point kick and the score remained 12 - 6 into the second quarter.

The second quarter clearly belonged to QB Mike Simpson and the Madison Mad Dogs as they "kicked it up a notch" and put another 6 pts. on the board. Mike Simpson handed off to Brian Knuckles for a 23 yd touchdown. Kicker Drew Christ took the field and launched the ball straight down the middle for the PAT. This was followed by QB Mike Simpson's 1 yd rush that brought the score to Dogs 20 - 'Canes 12.

The Dogs scored first in the second half with a 2 pt. field goal kick and 11:44 left in the third quarter. Dogs 22 - 12. Then the Hurricanes turned on that comeback style they have been getting a reputation for when QB Mike Tillis passed to WR Jose Santiago for a 5 yd touchdown. Kicker A. Champathong put it down the middle for the PAT. Dogs 22 - 'Canes 19 The fourth quarter Hurricanes were in the groove. Mike Tillis scored again with another QB run followed by a good extra point kick from A. Champathong. The 'Canes took the lead 26 - Dogs 22.

The Madison defense scored 2 pts. for a safety with 5:58 on the clock. 'Canes 26 - Dogs 24. A kick-off to the Mad Dogs and a fumble on the return put Honolulu back in control of the ball. Steve Sinkus rushed for the last touchdown of the game and field goal kick from A. Champathong sealed the deal.
