The Madison Mad Dogs relied on defense and special teams to move to 6-4 and position themselves ahead of the Honolulu Hurricanes in the PIFL playoffs. The Mad Dogs exploded for their highest point total of the season in the 64-36 win. The win was the fifth consecutive home victory for the Mad Dogs and moved them to 6-4 for the season.
The Mad Dogs defense was on the field for all but two plays in the entire first quarter, but held the Hurricanes to 78 yards passing. The defensive pressure caused one safety and blocked the Hurricanes' lone field goal attempt in the game.
Special teams again took it to a Mad Dogs opponent. The special teams finished with six kickoff returns for 188 yards and one touchdown. Nick Johnson was on the receiving end of a kick-off. He handed off to wide receiver Mandrill Dean, who scrambled off the reverse for a touchdown to put the 'Dogs up 50-20.
The Mad Dogs broke their own attendance record of 4,824 with 5,092 paid attendees at Saturday's contest. Prior to Saturday's game, the Mad Dogs held the league record in attendance.
The next contest for the Mad Dogs comes on July 3rd at Denver. Green Bay handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season to drop them to second in current league standings. The other PIFL game resulted in a Louisiana win, moving the Beast to 8-1. The top four teams in the league move on the PIFL playoffs.
The Mad Dogs return to the friendly confines of the Dane County Coliseum on July 18th against the Colorado Wildcats.
