The Washington Commandos was one of the four original AFL teams. In their first season, the Commandos finished at 2-4 and fourth place out of four teams. The team did not compete in 1988, and became the Maryland Commandos in 1989. In 1990, the team became the Washington Commandos, even though they played in Virginia, on the George Mason University campus. The Commandos franchise did not survive all the losing and moving; the team folded altogether following the 1990 season with only four wins in franchise history. In 1990, attendance numbers came dangerously close to dipping below 3,000. There is talk of bringing a Washington franchise back to the AFL in the future, but nothing has been confirmed as of this writing.
