The San Antonio Gunslingers were an NAL expansion team for 2022 and went 4-8 in the regular season, missing the playoffs. Longtime indoor football veteran Robert Kent quarterbacked the team, throwing for 2,557 yards, 66 touchdowns and sixteen interceptions. Kahlil Rashaad was his top target, catching 89 balls for 1,124 yards and 20 touchdowns. Phillip Barnett caught 22 scores. The Gunslingers were highly competitive but went 0-5 to begin the year, losing to Orlando by eight and Columbus by one. The Gunslingers were able to win four out of six and beat every team in the league except for Columbus. The team returned in 2023 and had an 8-4 regular season, qualifying for the playoffs for the first time. Arvell Nelson quarterbacked the team, passing for 2,420 yards, 41 scores and twelve interceptions. He also scored nineteen times on the ground. Kali Rashaad led all receivers with 978 yards and twelve touchdowns. Phillip Barnett caught thirteen touchdowns. The Gunslingers won their first five games, four of which came consecutively on the road. Down the stretch, however, the team lost its final three games and went on the road at Carolina in the playoffs. A 26-14 second half secured a 52-36 Cobras victory.
